I'm going on holiday to Pembrokeshire between 12th and 22nd May, and hope to go to Skomer during that time (working on getting the parents to agree to let me go more than once!). What is it like on the island in mid-late May?

Fantastic - a wealth of breeding seabirds eg auks with a backdrop of bluebells - I used to be able to see Skomer from my bedroom window but did not visit it often enough.

See if your folks will take you up to St Davids and get on the Thousand Island tours around Ramsay Island - the latest trip of the day may get you some shearwaters.

I'm sure JH will have some more info on this area

Katherine,

Kev knows I'm from Pembrokeshire, and have close links to Pembrokeshire Bird Group and some of their members.

This is a good link:
http://www.welshwildlife.org/attachments/Skomer%20Bird%20Leaflets/Skomer%20Timeline%a9Peter%20Gill%20%26%20Associates.pdf
Its a timeline for Skomer wildlife and your timing will be spot on. Puffins will come up to your feet and wait for you to move so they can access their nests!
I have links to Pembs Bird Group and older posts on my blog have Skomer information. Boat trips around the islands are good too, Kev mentioned late ones as sometimes the Puffin / Manx Shearwater rafts are an awesome sight.

Hope this helps a little.
