I think that I have a case of trichomoniasis in the garden. Earlier today when filling the feeders, I noticed a dead greenfinch on the ground close by. At the moment, there is another puffy, lethargic greenfinch out there who is remarkably tolerant of people being close to it. I know that the disease is common to greenfinches and wonder if trichomoniasis is indeed in my garden and that mass cleaning of my bird feeders with disinfectant etc is probably needed.

What cleaning stuff do other people on here use, and how do I go about cleaning the feeders?

Katherine,

I cleaned my lot out over a week so there was always some feeders out. I have always washed mine in hot soapy water [any washing-up liqiud] in a different bowl to that I use to do the pots. I have nut, seed and fat feeders and I do them all the same. I have one of the 20-port Droll Yankees as well. I use a small sponge and a stick about 12-18 inches long and push it down from each end. Each feeder needs to be dismantled and then washed and rinsed. In this weather I either hang the feeder on the washing line on stand them on the concrete to dry out completely. Then next day put them back together and the jobs done. I also wash mine in a winter as well.

Hope this helps.

Max
