The Far Ings Bird Group are getting together, after a break this summer, on Sunday 25th. we have decided that it would be fun/torture to do a bird race around the reserve during the daylight hours. We will have Group members on Site from 0700-1900 (ish) so if you are around the reserve on that day and you would like to contribute any sighting to our quest then please grab one of us (we will be the ones with bags under our eyes and no hair left). There may even be a cuppa on the go. We're basing our efforts from the Old Visitor Centre so there may be someone in that area unless we find a nice vagrant!!!! |

We had a good day today even though the weather forecast let us down. At 0700 we concentrated on the receding tide and watched the River with vantage points west adn east. We were rewarded with a good selection of waders and the spectacle of 600 pink footed geese leaving the River in groups to feed on the nearby Wolds. This spectacle remained one of the highlights of the day, the noise atmospheric authentication that we are in autumn penetrated our flesh. on route to the bank we were lucky to connect with a good range of remaining summer warblers to fill our list before breakfast, and reach 64 species. We then searched the Reserve proper to target the bread and butter birds and dinner time we had added such birds as song thrush, bullfinch, avocet, grey plover, bar tailed godwit and sanderling. We were doing well and over bread and soup we totted up haul to be 82 species. Things then got tough adn the next 3 hours only produced and extra 3 species, but great reedbed birds in one go - the ness hide stake out captured bearded tit, bittern and water rail. Now at 85 species we headed back to the shore to try for seabirds coming up River on a rising tide. Excrutiatingly the 7-11 gannet that approached from the east would not make it passed teh Bridge adn no manner of willing them to do it helped. A great time by all. |
