Post subject: | Question about Gibraltar Point.... |
When is the best time (and best time of year) to see large numbers of birds there? Every time I go, it's usually the late morning/afternoon and not a lot seems to go on. There were Knot, Godwits, Sanderlings, Turnstones and Oystercatchers on the beach, but not really much going on inland, save for windswept Mallards, Goldfinches, corvids and Gulls. Is Gib in this area of drought in Lincolnshire? I visited the reserve today (5th) as it's my birthday and the once-watery areas that the Mere Hide, the other hide across the path, down a grassy area and round a hummock and Jackson's overlook are alarmingly low or bereft of water!! Perhaps one day, someone who has a better ability to pick birds out of the landscape by eye could accompany me round? Perhaps my observational ability isn't quite as sharp as it needs to be! |

Hi Katherine For bird numbers - early morning is best for inbound migrants and general passage - see my earlier post re redwing arrival. For rarities - they all generally go through later in the day when I am firmly wedged in the office - white-tailed eagles, collared pratincoles, cranes, etc etc ! Some reports of good seabirds today - bonxies, poms etc And yes, record low water levels at the moment - this goes back to the virtual drought in spring. Kev |
