Not sure how you all keep track of your Records and Lists. Do any of you use Birding Software or do you just do your own thing? Anyone have any thoughts as to what is good package to use? Thanks for any feedback. James |

James, Good question that I would like info on too. Birding records are the last thing I still record (in written form) within log books. Anyone use recommended software? Cheers |

LBC uses Wildlife Recorder for all records and has done for several years. Sheila and I continually update the LBC database with records from The Forum and Birdguides. Several members also use Wildlife Recorder and this makes transfer of data from one database to another easy. Gibraltar Point also keep their records on Wildlife Recorder and this, once again, makes transfers of data between LBC and Gib straightforward. Software updates are pretty regular and fully documented and this includes taxonomic changes too. Have a look at www.wildlife.co.uk Colin and Sheila |

I recommend the use of Birdtrack which is run by the BTO and RSPB. It is very easy to use and your records are used to build up a national picture of bird distribution and abundance. Your records are also passed on to the local bird recorder. Birdtrack encourages users to compile complete lists of all species of birds identified on one visit to a location. I just type them on Microsoft Word in separate documents for each list, backing them up with copies on a USB stick. Is Birdtrack expensive? |

Colin/Shelia/Hugh, Many thanks - I have used Birdtrack for about 3 years now and found it OK however "cloud" based rather than on my PC and held with BTO if you know what I mean. Regards, John |

Hi I have used Birdtrack for nearly a year and have found it very easy. I do however also keep a list on my Computer that is forwarded to Colin each month, just as a back up. Malcolm. |

Thanks for the replies. Can Birdtrack & Wildlife recorder be used for historical records or are they only for current records. I have used software before but I lost the records when i changed pcs and have 30 years of birding to list. |

Hi James Wildlife Recorder can certainly be used for historical records as well as building up your daily sightings and even overseas and out of county trips. LBC records on this software go back to 1998 and a few even earlier but it will accept records back to 1900!! Any backups can be done as often as you like onto a data stick. Any data you wish to look at is quickly and easily sorted in various ways ie by species, date or location etc. Although I don't actually use all of Wildlife Recorder's facilities it is possible, for example, to produce reports. Thanks Colin & Sheila. I have forked out for Wildlife recorder. The demo looks easier to use than the one I had previously installed. The problem I had with losing data was that when i tried to move from one pc to another i couldn't access the details. Regards, James |
