Hello, saw a female Ruddy duck this afternoon, however there seems to be some conflicting views about whether the exact whereabouts of these birds should be disclosed. Quite prepared to say where it was if it is of interest to anyone but will respect other views.

I wonder if the location in your profile might be a clue?!

I personally don't see why you shouldn't disclose the location in any case.

Thanks John, as you intimated it was on the smaller gravel pit, the one you get to as you go out of Norton Disney and before you get to the Wood lane turn, about 2pm, hanging out with a few coots.

As far as I know the cull is still ongoing, so Defra will likely be down to shoot the bird soon.

You will find the Ruddy Duck situation is a controversial subject Oliver. Certainly those who are against the cull now tend not to disclose Ruddy Duck sightings on here because by doing so, they feel its like putting up a poster for DEFRA to go down and shoot the bird.
Personally, whenever I now see a Ruddy Duck I dont disclose its whereabouts and there are others on here that do the same. There is of course the other side of the fence, with some (including the RSPB), in support of the cull and thus fine with you advertising the whereabouts of a Ruddy Duck.

Further to Geoff's, Chris's and Dean's posts above, - and avoiding adopting a pro- or anti-cull position- my only comment on this particular Ruddy Duck thread (and we have had quite a few posts on the subject over the past years :roll: ) is as follows. I regret the way in which Oliver was set up for a classic sting......and he proceeded, innocently and willingly, to reveal his avian Pin Number by disclosing the exact location of the very pit for the DEFRA sharp-shooters to target. Indeed, he ended up thanking the promoter for the opportunity.
DEFRA will be laughing all the way to the pit bank.

Would it be possible to set up a poll on here to find out how many members actually think the cull is a good thing or not. I would be very interested to know.

I like the bird as I also like the Grey Squirrel. I know that gets certain members backs up, well tough! I'm also a big fan of the Magpie. The latter two make me laugh and in my book that's okay by me. :lol:

30 votes at 7.30pm today out of 268 members - this shows you that the pro's have voted, the anti's have voted and 238 couldn't give a monkeys! I hope I will be proved wrong in the next few days!

Taken from the 2010 report (which is due back from the printers anytime soon....)

Recorded from just 10 sites in Lincolnshire during 2010. The decline in this species is due to the cull of the UK’s population of Ruddy Duck being undertaken by the Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA), initially for five years but now extended into 2011/12.
The table below allows comparison between minimum monthly totals in 2009 and 2010.
