I notice that on "Birdguides" there is a report to-day of a Ring-Necked Duck on private fishing lakes
near West Ashby with "strictly no access". I wonder why anyone should make a report of a bird if
there is "no access" and indeed if there is "strictly no access" how anyone saw the bird in the first place.
Is it just me or is this really a very odd report. Experience suggests that some will still try to see the bird
and will ignore the "strictly no access" bit and so this is only likely to cause problems (maybe the recent Red-
necked Phalarope in the same area should have served as a warning).

As I see it Trevor, The land is private. And there is no access becuase of people inc members of the LBC ignoring when the Red-necked Phalarope becoming no access and went in the field when it had lifestock in. Understandably the land owner got annoyed to put it politly. These people that ignored the no access have quite clearly ruined it for other birders. It's been reported because it's a rare bird. I'm sure some people will try and find the bird by going into the field.

Valid point Anthony ...

Perhaps the landowner is a birder who wanted the record to be entered into the county database but not the intrusion on his land

Thanks for the comment - I appreciate the point you make but my worry was that
giving a fairly precise location and saying "strictly no access" was likely to invite trouble.
Most of the genuine birders (and I am sure they are in the majority) will heed the warning but
equally we know that there are a number out there who will ignore it or simply see this as a challenge
and are prepared to trample over anybody's property to claim a "tick". Maybe best not to
disclose a location or even not to make the sighting public and simply tell the county
recorder.

Could it be the Duck is viewable from the public highway even though it is located on private property Trevor?

I don't think the report mentioned that Nick so I can't comment but if it was the case then usually
the reporter would have added something like "view only from public road".
