In the UK there are about 10 million cats which kill on average 50 birds each every year. I am often asked why there is a lack of garden birds often by cat owners...

Cats are a big problem to wildlife. I can never understand why wildlife lovers, would let pet cats run wild ?

Deaths by "Bird Slicers" pales into insignificance against those as a result of cats, but we don't get public enquiries against our feline 'friends'!! :wink:

Well chaps I guess I'm the odd one out (again) :lol:

I can only speak for myself in regards cats and wildlife.

There is certainly no shortage of birds (unless it's breeding season) in both my front and back garden and although I don't own a cat since Fannie-Anne passed away four years ago, there is a cat that "lives" in the garden ( and has an outdoor kennel ) 24/7. During any period of twelve hours I've seen 6 cats visit ( and none of them do their business here, thankfully) and I have to be honest I have seen them stalking the birds but rarely do they catch them. Maybe because there is usually upwards of 100 here there is safety in number and more alarm calls. If I only had a few birds visit I daresay they would be more slain.

The cat that "lives" here lives in harmony with a pair of hedgehog in fact within feet of each other for the last few months.

And you all know from my garden sightings that I've had some cracking birds over the years, and they are not put off by the felines :D . And long may it continue. Last year I had two pair of Blackies and between them they had five broods and none were killed!

I understand that cats do kill wildlife but it is inbred for them to do that.

I'm not getting into any slanging match, like in previous years, we are all entitled to our opinions, and I can only speak from experience.

Unlike Terry I'm not really into pussy but I would prefer to see more with bells on.

Its times like this when one appreciates the efforts of british gamekeepers, farmers, pigeon fanciers, car owners, fish keepers and vivisectionists. Do any of these groups publish figures to claim how many cats they kill each year and justify them in terms of the amount of wildlife saved. I thought not.

While we're on cats, what about dogs and their irresponsible owners which have such a massive impact on Lincolnshire's ground nesting birds, particularly on the coast. Not to mention the badgers, foxes, mink, crows, shooters, anglers, fishermen, poisoners, egg collectors, gardeners who put down slug pellets, people who hang bits of streamers up on their roof so house martins can't nest, politicians, bankers and international terrorists.....few thats better.

Ok, to show I'm completely unbiased I'll add irresponsible birders, twitchers, bird photographers, ringers and garden bird feeders: hows that? Not sure how many birds each of these categories kill per annum; I'll leave that to others to determine.

i once lost a pied fly clutch to someone who tried to ring them whilst still to young, they got chilled and died, also just watch the dog walkers at tetney despite notices to keep them under close control they are continually allowed to run riot through the marsh and foul the area. not good. if you ask people to keep them under control you only get abuse and told they have been doing it for years. my cat / pussy was a house cat and to my knowledge never caught anything in her life but the cat family are natures supreme predators. fancy me being accused of being smutty on the web page, i am shocked :lol: have to be more careful in future :oops:
