I wholly endorse your comments, Terry. Both Martin and Tormod have a refreshing approach to bird watching and Tormods efforts in Varanger to persuade the locals the potential of actively encouraging birders to the area were eventually rewarded. I liked the quote (possibly mis-quoted by me!) "If you enjoy your bird watching you're a good birder - if you really enjoy your bird watching you're a really good birder." Could it become the Forums motto?? |

Stuart, They are two good lengthy soundbites but, if adopted as you suggest, they would inevitably lead to misunderstandings. For better or for worse, to most birders ' a good birder ' has the connotation of skill. The soundbites have the connotation of enjoyment and skill may well be absent. The soundbites are certainly acceptable in a philosophical context but not in the birding world as it is. Freddy |

I think I know what you mean Freddy, but who are we to judge others skill level? I like the philosophical approach. Stuart |
