Can anyone help, with an ideal holiday destination?
For my birthday next Feb my wife wants to take me somewhere hot and with a beach. Has anyone any ideas where to go which is also good for me to do some birding? I am asking now so I can start persuading her that said place is ideal and to start pricing and saving up.

Skegness or Rimac always go down well with sun seekers and birders--otherwise try Florida or the Sechelles

Or try Gambia, Goa, Kenya,or South Africa, all have good beaches
and some good birding, and wildlife. John.

We would suggest Goa, its bird life is amazing, its very hot in February, lots of beaches and things to do and see and very very cheap out there!

Goa or Sri Lanka are both great in our winter with good beaches, great bird life and friendly people.
If you go to Goa consider a 3 day trip inland to "Backwoods camp" in the western Ghats, it is a fantastic place, enjoyed by both my wife and myself. If you want any more info send me a pm.

It has got to be The Gambia for me. At least 100 new birds without trying and possibly 200 with a little effort. It is onlya 6 hour flight and no time difference.

All I can say is lucky you.

hi Geof
i can recommend all those mentioned with the exception of rimac and yarmouth in February, it depends upon how much you want to spend and how far you want to go. Langkawi is also excellent, Tobago gives you a tatse of South American species plus good seabirds. Trinidads caroni swamp is not to be missed. Any of the Caribbean Islands can be superb even Jamaica and Cuba. I am well travelled and have numerous bits of literature and books to use as reference. If you decide on any definate destination post another request and i will perhaps be able to help you with local knowledge,

Australia. It's got more beach than you can wave a stick at and the birds come and write their names in your notebook.

but not when your waving the stick, (the crocs sneak up behind you and take a snack). John

Admittedly there are a few hazards apart from crocs. The seven deadliest land snakes in the world, funnel web spiders, red-back spiders, some very nasty plants and I know people who've been chased by cassowries; however, no-one's been killed by one for several years. Oh and don't even think about the dangers in the sea. You'd never get in!
