Post subject:  Bird table frenzy now the deep frost has set in.
I couldn't help but notice how frantic the birds have been these past couple of days with this heavy frost spell.

Unusual for our patch to see Blackbirds so close to the feeders, usualy they find plenty under the hedgerows. Also rather surprising is the number of Blue Tits - one or two being the norm but today had 5 at the sunflower dispenser! Even the Wrens have come out from under the nettles and are visiting the spills at the feeder base!

This freeze must be a challenge for them, I have made a point to top-up the feeders and water trays twice a day now instead of the usual once in the morning - at least until we start to see temps rise above freezing :-)

Mark, we too have noticed an increase in garden bird activity on these frosty days. I have commented previously about the numbers of blackbirds that we are getting. Today I counted at least 55 feeding on windfall bramley apples.
Don't know how long this will continue as the apples have nearly all gone.
Have put a picture in the common birds section of the album.

Post subject:  Tough nuts
Noticed this past few days the Blackbirds have taken to eating the sunflower hearts, so been putting plenty on the ground. The chances of them getting those under the feeders are slim, the Goldfinch and Chaffinch don't give them up easily.

I haven't noticed an increase in the number of birds coming since the cold spell, unless they come first thing.

Three days ago saw someone had dropped a bag of chips in street, no sooner had they gone than the neighbourhood [13] Common Gulls decended.

I have been feeding soaked Mixed Dried Fruit (Out of date packet from back of larder) the last few days and have attracted many more Blacbirds than I have ever seen in the garden. Starlings love them too.

I think I will be buying and feeding these again in the future.

Illegal number of starlings in the garden today! Result? One already-eaten-after-two-hours suet block!!!!

Best performer today - Coal Tit regularly eating in the 'ground feeding haven' I've set up so there's at least one starling-proof feeding area!
