My December newsletter only arrived last week (was it just mine?) so apologies if this has been discussed already somewhere... Is the photograph of a Slavonian Grebe not really a Black-necked? Steve |

Then it is a very interesting one with an apparently totally dark neck, restricted white on the face, fine bill, and no loral spot. The crown-line is also rather odd for a Slav. I still remain to be convinced! Steve |

It would be interesting to hear the comments of the photographer who took it. |

The Slavonian Grebe pictured in the newsletter is I assume the same bird that was present at Covenham Reservoir for several weeks and seen by many birders. It is not a Black-necked grebe. picture below taken by Neil Smith at Covenham Reservoir looks very similar to the newsletter photo and may show it in a different light. The newsletter picture does look a bit dark. ![]() |

Colin Jennings took the trouble to obtain and send me three of Neil's photos, including the one reproduced, rather poorly, in the newsletter. I can see that it is indeed a Slav, though not quite the normal idea of a juv of the species. Steve |
