Evening Richard, Was it definitely Marsh Tit? Marsh Tit would be a very rare bird for Messingham. The similiar Willow Tit is resident there. regards Chris |

Hi Chris, Thanks for yours. I was alerted to the the presence of the Marsh Tit by it's diagnostic 'pichoo' call. One of my target birds at MSQ was Willow Tit but unsuccessful. Regards...........Richard.. |

An excellent record then Richard. I'm not sure when Marsh Tit was last recorded at Messingham (if any?) - but if it has, then it will have been a long, long time ago. Marsh Tits are very rare birds in the north of the county. As far as I am aware, the nearest Marsh Tits are SW of Lincoln, though there are birds just over the Humber. I've had the opposite of you on my visits to Messingham - Willow Tit nearly every time but never a Marsh. regards Chris |

Richard, You say MSQ was quiet would you mind explaining what you mean? If I'd got Marsh Tit [never seen one] I certainly wouldn't have said it was quiet. Seeing plenty of the waders you mention are a delight to see these last few years, as I have seen of late. Others have said it's quiet as well, considering the amount of species seen in a day it's far from quiet in my humble opinion. Max |

Hi,The most likely noise you heard was Siskins which to me make a smiliair noise(they both start with pitchoo to me,but thats where the similarity ends-go on google and listen to either) and their is a good flock there at present,i go very regularly to msq and marsh tit is not recorded there.d johnson and I and others had some in the late 70s early 8os on brumby Common,none round scunny since then. Just to add a little fire to the conversation. Seven years ago while at MSQ with an experienced watcher he was convinced he had a Marsh Tit! But a certain birder who we all know but is not a member of this forum told us we were wrong, he said it had to be a Willow Tit. And after putting it on Lincs Bird News before we had the forum was told there was no way it was a Marsh Tit because they don't come this far north in Lincs. I said at the time they are near York which is 50 miles further north than MSQ. So... Max |

I've certainly never heard a Siskin call "Pichoo",you must have differant hearing to everyone else Rog.As for the wooden spoon,i think you'll do fine on your own without anyone's help.On to records of Marsh Tit,i have never heard or seen one in North Lincolnshire,but have seen them at Welton Water just across the humber.This species is highly sedentary,and does not venture far from the core breeding areas,but occasional migrants do turn up and one was trapped and ringed at Spurn in recent years,so you never know.Looks like Marsh Tit is the new Goshawk eh? Hi,Steve,everyone hears things differently,,and we all know the staus of marsh tits,as for calling the copper kettle black.............. youve been known to stir the pot and on more than a few occasions,goshawk has been seen at messingham,by me by others,marsh tit has not their is no common ground there.The recession wont affect wooden spoon making it seems  Rog. |
