Join enthusiastic leaders on field trips to diverse habitats, including blueberry barrens, grasslands, coastal marshes, freshwater wetlands and sphagnum bog forests. All summer programs boat trips to Eastern Egg Rock, where Dr. Steve Kress and his team of biologists have successfully restored an island colony of Atlantic Puffins, and Roseate, Arctic and Common Terns. Participants live in restored wooden buildings and are treated to fabulous meals served family style by camp chef extraordinaire Janii Laberge.
”Your program, staff, environs and heritage are an absolute TREASURE. Memories of the "Joy of Birding" week will live contentedly in my heart for a very long time. Thank you for caring about our wonderful world and its future.” - Rick, computer programmer, Pennsylvania
For over 75 years we have been running residential ornithology and environmental programs for adults, teens, educators, and environmental leaders. Roger Tory Peterson was the camp’s first birding instructor in 1936 and many famous naturalists, including Rachel Carson, have lived and written about the 330-acre wildlife sanctuary.
Renouned birding authors and ornithologists Pete Dunne, Scott Weidensaul, Steve Kress, Lang Elliott, Don Kroodsma, Bill Thompson III and many more will be in residence during the 2012 sessions. Usually you can just see these people for a keynote address at a birding festival; on Hog Island they will be your guides for the whole session!
”I really felt that I was in the presence of some of the best birding people in the country, if not the world. How wonderful!” – Peggy, retired teacher, Pennsylvania
