8 Waxwings at Europarc.

Also, 5 Waxwings this morning (Friday) sat in top of tall tree along Great Coates Road, close to Toothill Roundabout.

same 5 Dave -- they were rather mobile this am --

2 very confiding Waxwings at Gib Point the other day were sitting in a Dog Rose Bush gorging themselves on rose hips - some quite big. This is the first time that I personally have seen them feeding on rose hips. It would be interesting if observers noted what the Waxwings they see are eating. No interest was being shown in the Buckthorn berries.

We observed that the five Grimsby Waxwings were taking rose hips when at Europarc, although it is not known what they were feeding on when they moved off out of view. They had the opportunity of selecting smaller & softer berries at Europarc so the choice of rose hips was a little surprising.

Checked every day since first sighting, no waxwings in spite of acres of superb red berried shrubs all over Europarc. Why do they leave such a good food source ?

To give some of us an hard time by the luck of it. I drove past Europarc on Sunday but after seeing how many trees there were decided it was going to be a non-starter.

Waxwings seem to have a sweet tooth - their favourite food seems to be the White-fruited Rowan, followed by other Rowan species, then Rose Hip and Hawthorn - moving on to Apples! and Cotoneaster before begrudgingly going on to Pyracantha.

Well worth checking Waxwings for colour rings - 41 were colour ringed in Orkney and 137 in Aberdeen last month and many of these birds have moved south - one from Aberdeen was seen first in Nothumberland, then Isle of Man and now in South Notts. Two ringed (arriving?)on the east coast at Spurn and Gib point have subsequently gone due west.
