Graham,

Further to your most recent Waxwing post above (on page 1), what is your estimate of the percentage of adults to first winters in the "at least 400" Waxwings you recorded yesterday (Sat) at Burton and the "additional 49" at Alkborough?

analysis of my photos and just watching the birds coming to drink, often the best way to check big flocks for colour ringed birds, suggests a ratio of about 20% - 25% adults but clearly the %s vary in the different groups though there is clearly a preponderance of first-winter birds in all the flocks I have seen. In smaller flocks it should be easier to check the proportions of adults to first-winters.
