Given that we actually had calm seas for a change this weekend, I decided to look out for porpoises, since we have vey few winter records along the mid coastal areas. I was lucky enough to see 3, probably 4 in a single pod, 1 of which was probably a juvenile based on size. The problem with counting numbers in a pod is that if they are close together and coming up individually, it's difficult to judge. They were swimming south about half a mile off shore.
If observers do have sightings of cetaceans, it would be helpful to let Dave Miller, coastal ranger for the LWT know at Gib., because we are trying to gather data to justify the proposed MCZ off our coast.

Bird wise, as might be expected, it was quiet with 12 red-throated divers moving locally, 8 common scoters, 2 cormorants, 8 sanderling, 12 black-headed gulls and about 50 each of common gulls and herring gulls.

Regards
Cliff
