After holding up for many years the Barton pits population seems to have crashed suddenly; i have only seen one bird this year so far in spite of a lot of hours in 2013 territories: one 2013 nest site has been trashed by a farmer / new land owner with three ancient willows cut down for no obvious reason but in general there seems no clear reason why any birds would have gone. Maybe more will appear in spring but not looking good at the moment.

On my patch at Swanpool/Boultham mere I too have only had one sighting of a single bird this year. The outlook is not good. The habitat, nor the farming practises, on my patch have not changed but the birds have almost disappeared.
Similarly with Tree Sparrow which was once common but last year, for the first time in 30 years, I did not record a single bird and have not done so yet this year.
