Whilst ringing this afternoon there was a noticeable number of Redwings (30), Siskin (40+), Brambling (5) and Redpoll sp. in the Birch scrub. I caught 1 Lesser Redpoll and 2 Common Redpolls which I could only differentiate on biometrics. The Lesser had a wing length of 70 mm and a weight of 12.4g whereas the Commons had wing lengths of 77 and 75 and respective weights of 15.0g and 14.7g. I wouldn't have been able to positively separate them in the field.
