I recorded my largest flock of Pink-Footed Geese yesterday for this autumn of 2017 which in total were
about 320 heading north @ 08.20 over Fishtoft. I stopped the car to get out and listen.

They were their usual very vocal selves with their distinctive rather shrill medley. In strong sunlight the young birds look darker whilst the underside is a marbled not a uniform grey as in the adults. Unfortunately yesterday morning was cloudy and misty. I'm a bit of a fan as you will probably have guessed

kind regards

George

Fully agree - the sound (and sight) of overhead wild geese never ceases to be special. Can brighten up the greyest autumn/winter day.

In spring and autumn, whimbrel are equally special - perhaps more so.

Lower down the list come redwings - not quite so delightful.

Having said that, I would like to see/ hear more winter thrushes. They seem scarcer than in years gone by. Is global warming prompting more of them to remain in Scandinavia for winter?

A couple of large skiens flew NW today south of Folkingham at 12:00pm. Approx 400 total.
