Redshank 55 Dunlin 1260 Ringed Plover 80 Knot 45 only 3 birds still showing brick -red breeding plumage. Oystercatcher 90 Lapwing 18 Grey Plover 31 widely scattered amoungst the other waders with only 2 birds not showing face and underparts strikingly black and white Common Sandpiper 2 Arctic Tern 2 Common Tern 11 Peregrine 1 Very dark. A shrill excited chattering Kek-kek-kek heard at one point as it flew through a party of Dunlin it had flushed only seconds earlier. We then had not one but five more repeat performances and by now every single wader was in the air! |

Where do think the Peregrine could have come from? |

Thanks for your comments. Peregrine is widely reported in first winter period although I accept that numbers are difficult to assess with such a mobile species. There seems to be little hard evidence of passage recorded at either season as it is often difficult to distinguish from daily wanderings of wintering birds. However the species has always been regarded as a passage migrant as well as a winter visitor and I understand that Scandinavian birds pass through on migration. I personally have no late summer or autumn records at Freiston over many years but that may not be statistically of value. Peregrine has come back with a vengeance since its catastrophic decline in the 1960's and not necessarily to traditional locations such as sea cliffs. Church towers and Power Station cooling towers to name just two so this is probably a bird from not too far away. Many thanks for your reply. |
