A bit of an effort today to try and get a decent species count failed miserably with a total of 73 species recorded,the highlights where as follows: Alkborough: 1 Merlin 1 Barn Owl Pair Stonechat Read's Island: 5 Marsh Harrier(4 juv/ist wint and 1st adult male) 1 Peregrine Barton Pit's: 5 Bittern at least!! at Far-Ings(Brilliant views of at least 3 birds on the ice at the edge of the reedbeds) male Smew Worlaby Carrs: 2 Barn Owl female/1st wint. Hen Harrier 4 Stonechat(2m,2f) Regards Steve. |

Not a failure to my mind - 5 bitterns!!!! Only 73 species?????????? |

I was hoping to be nearer the 100 mark and the Bittern's where pretty amazing!. Steve. |

A good count of Bitterns. There has also been recent sightings of them at Rimac and over Covenham Res - presumably continental birds brought in by the cold weather? |

I'm of the same ilk as Chris when you say that 73 is miserable, I think you could have worded it different. I would imagine most of the members of this forum would be ecstatic in getting that number, I certainly would!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On average I get maybe 40 for a days birding so it looks as if I'm going to have VERY MISERABLE 2010 ![]() ![]() Regards Max |
