A brief 15 minute stop did not give me enough time to identify a bird calling from deep in the willow scrub and the little varmint would not show itself! The call was like the wheezing call of a Greenfinch but shorter and distinctly di-syllabic. "Wheeze-aw". Repeated every 10 seconds or so.

Any ideas?

Also present:
1 Lesser Whitethroat singing and showing well
3 Willow Warblers
1 Chiffchaff
1 Cettis Warbler - heard singing
1 Yellow Wagtail
6+ Swallows

Just a wild guess, but your transcription suggests the so-called "rain" call of breeding male Chaffinches (see BWPi or Concise).

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the tip. Listened to BWPi rain call but its not the call. What I heard was more nasally like a greenfinch. Still a mystery I am afraid!

Thanks anyway

Best regards,

Ian
