I had an Email from a ringing colleague, Chris Hughes, today to say that he was at Lincoln Railway Station at 4.30pm. yesterday. An immature Gannet circled the station a couple of times and flew off towards the Brayford! |

Maybe it's decided that the sea is too harsh and he's better off in the rivers of England! |

Either the Lincoln Gannet, or another one arrived at North Kelsey this afternoon. I had a call at about 6.00 p.m. to say that a Gannet was standing beside the road on the outskirts of North Kelsey village. It had strayed into the road a few times and been pushed back onto the verge with a yard brush as the lady that lived nearby did not like the look of that 5 inch beak! Linda and I went to take a look and found it straight away. It was within three feet of the highway. I caught it and we wrapped it in a blanket. The bird is well under weight but was still quite aggressive. We got it home where Linda defrosted some haddock which she cut into slices. This we managed to get down the birds' throat without too much difficulty. The Gannet - a juvenile, is now in a secure pen, along with a bowl of water, where I hope it will survive the night. I will contact the RSPCA early in the morning so as to get it it properly cared for. Roy |

Happily, the Gannet survived overnight and seemed to have recovered some of its strength. We gave it another feed of haddock this morning and it also consumed a few lumps of flesh that it took from my hand! Despite being in a weakened state the muscles in the Gannets bill were incredibly strong and there is also a little hooked bit at the end of the bill that can soon do some damage. I was quite relieved when the RSPCA collected it at about 11.00 a.m. The Gannet will be taken to Blue Cross in Grimsby to be checked by a vet and then may well be sent to the Wash Wildlife centre to recover.
