A major rarity at Whisby today came in the form of a drake Mandarin found by Claire Birch on Thorpe Lake! Successfully 'twitched' by Chris Grimshaw and Pete Haywood who just happened to be at Whisby anyway! Was associating with a small group of Mallard (recent influx probably due to the cold weather) and present in the north east corner till dusk. Only the second Whisby record, the first was a pair on Willow Lake on 14th May 1992 with the f remaining until 20th May.

Also a f Goosander on Thorpe Lake this afternoon as well.

Of note an adult Caspian Gull (courtesy of Dean Nicholson of course!) was on Butterley's Pit yesterday.

I was very interested to read about the drake Mandarin at Whisby. I regret that I am not familiar with the male Mandarin except that I understand that it is often referred to as an "exotic-looking chap". Did it show the bushy orange "whiskers" and triangular orange sails or do they loose this in winter? I regard this sort of information to be much more interesting particularly to our younger members than the species name for the heading whos spelling was incorrect. It should be Aix galericulata!
