I don't know which was the biggest eye opener this morning when I opened the back curtains, the great pile of snow or the woodcock exploding into flight just one metre in front of the window in my yard.

With the school closed I dragged my 6 year old Son through knee deep snow to his initial amusement. Amongst the snowball and snowman activity we saw 12 siskin, plenty of redwing and 16 fieldfare, a woodcock in the scrub bottom of Barton Reedbed (was this my yard bird???), 3 whooper swans and 2 yellwohammer (around the bird feeders with the mixed feeder gang). In the roadside ditch we disturbed a snipe and a kingfisher.

Tears of pain worked my conscience and so I trudged the Boy home.
