spent a windy but dry and mostly cloudy 8 hours on the beach from 10:00 - 18:00 Herring Gull 1500+ Sanderling 90 Greenshank 1 Eider 4 females north Common Scoter 300+ Sandwich Tern about 90 or so during the day Little Tern 5 north with 2 juveniles and 2 adults south later Little Gull just 1 adult north Guillemot 10+ some with chicks and one being eaten by a GBBG Common Tern c50 Arctic Tern minimum of 200 during the day mostly fishing and drifting north but up to 25 on the beach at any one time with at least 30 juveniles seen -- for Arctic Terns to outnumber Commons by such a large proportion is most unusual but the fishing must be good for them and they seem to have fledged young early this year Arctic Skua 10+ including a flock of 6 that flew inland over the saltmarsh and then indulged in a long bout of chase and play before returning to the sea -- odd birds sitting on the beach but usually amongst the large flocks of Herring Gulls so approach was impossible Pomarine Skua 1 3cy seemed to be the same bird seen three times during the day but have not checked all my photos yet Kittiwake 70+ with a peak of 57 on the beach at any one time and a single 2cy colour ringed bird seen -- a few juveniles over the sea -- from the CR web site looks like this was a bird ringed at the colony in Lowestoft Suffolk [color=#4000BF]a quick reply from Colin Carter re the colour ringed Kitt see below Thank you for your report of a colour-ringed Kittiwake Orange DH. This bird was ringed as a pullus (chick) at Lowestoft Harbour on 28 June 2010. There is a small colony there which nests on an artificial wall originally built in mitigation of harbour demolitions. The colony is a remnant of large numbers which used to nest in Lowestoft in the heyday of fishing and is now the most Easterly colony in the UK. We have been ringing the chicks for 7 years but only started colour-ringing them in 2010. Apart from your record we had one sighting in September 2010 off the Island of Sylt, N Germany/color] BUT nothing else moving on the sea not a shearwater or storm petrel or anything apart from about 20 Gannets blogging |

The Arctic Terns that I've had passing Chapel Pt this week have ALL been heading north - no Juvs seen yet. And very few Commons so far. There have also been up to 13 Guillemots on the sea - all adults. |

At least 200 arctic terns at Gib this evening - many passing north and fishing offshore. At one time, 95 were visible in a single scan of the sea. At least 5 juvs involved. A line of feeding terns c1500 metres offshore were also probably arctics - another 60 birds minimum. I have never seen arctic terns in such numbers or feeding offshore like this previously. Several small flocks of common terns - amounted to about 45 approx. A good start to a series of monthly seawatching events July to September. Cheers Kev |
