It never ceases to amaze what you find by chance and it always happens when your binoculars are not in the car!
Looking across from London Road Boston this lunchtime to the dock side of the tidal river are some fairly mature bushes and small trees. At this location were no less than 5 G S Woodpeckers moving about and readily identified by their loud explosive call which first alerted me to their presence.

I have never considered this to be GS Woodpecker territory, but I am now considering whether or not these birds could be winter migrants from N Europe moving SW. I am vagely aware of a race that breeds from N Scandinavia south to Poland and does occur in small numbers on the east coast. Having said that I gather that it is more or less indistinguishable in the field from our own residents.
