15:00pm in light rain 2 male & 1 ringtail Hen harrier came into roost 15:30pm rain all but stopped 3 male & 1 ringtail flew around beet field for 1/2 hour 16:00pm joined by a Short-eared Owl & Merlin over beet field. 16:15pm 2 more Short-eared Owls near main drain. 16:20pm Mute swans flew onto pit and one hit the electric wires, loud bang and sparks flying, swan died instantly. It's mate flew round and landed near dead swan looking for it. ( at least 3 swans have hit the wires this winter, making a total of about 23 dead in the last 3 years) Unfortunatley the bird scarers that were put in place last year do not stop them from hitting the wires in the dark. Also present today: 7 Bewick's Swans (3 Juv and one with neck ring 981A) 1 Little Owl 3 Common Buzzard 4 Kestrel 86 Mute Swans 100+ Linnet 60+ Goldfinch 200+ Fieldfare |

Russell, I've added a few notes today on " Birds hitting wires in the dark " on General Lincs Birding that you and other members may find of interest. Freddy |
