Post subject:  Nocton Fen - Tue 6th Dec

I arrived on the Fen at 3.15 on a chilly afternoon but with little wind. I parked just off the lane by the large beetfield about half way between the Nocton Fen lane sharp bend and Wasps Nest, in the same spot as with Grahame Hopwood on 28 Nov.

No other local birders turned up but fortunately a Newark birder arrived as did a group of 4 seasoned birders from Derby. I say 'fortunately' because I was mainly watching a previous roost area (as with Grahame) near a barn complex with an adjacent green fuel tank whereas the Derby group picked up the main action about 200 yards or so well away to the left towards Wasps Nest, but still in the beet field. With 6 pairs of eyes scanning and people inter-communicating, I was able to share :

Hen Harrier - 2 males and a Ringtail which came into roost towards 4.00pm
Marsh Harrier - cream crown
Short-eared Owl - which flew across in front of us quite high up initially
Also :

Barn Owl - towards Nocton Delph
Fieldfare - c 70 at Wasps Nest
.......... - c 40 over the fen lane
