Post subject:  Red Kites at Stainby Landfill Site and area - 23 Jan

A full day's visit with my wife Inga to my daughter and grandson in Harlaxton (near Grantham ) enabled me to slip away for a time to check out the nearby Stainby Landfill Site. I drove there via the side roads rather than along the busy A1, which was a fortunate decision as rounding a bend towards Stainby I came across a roadkill Pheasant in the middle of the (quiet) road ......plus 3 Carrion Crows and a Red Kite disputing the feed. I slowed down, drove past, then returned and parked up to watch. At one stage the Red Kite grabbed what was left of the pheasant but was unable to gain height and dropped most of it, but retained what looked like a large leg/thigh portion.

At the Landfill Site itself and over the nearby fields, I counted some 10 Red Kites amid the hundreds of swirling Gulls and Corvids. There was a stiff breeze and the Kites used their considerable wingspan and rudder-like tail to manoeuvre skilfully amongst the competition.

On my return journey to Harlaxton, in addition to passing the roadkill Pheasant carcase again and the still-disputing Kite and Crows, I noted a further 3 (separate) Kites over the roadside fields : clearly an excellent area for this charismatic raptor.

Also seen on the trip were 2 Common Buzzards, a flock of c 30 Fieldfares and half a dozen Kestrels.
