Reported: 05/02/12 White Stork at Scrivelsby, one in field by the A1183 near the new wood c.1.5km from Scrivelsby this afternoon. Ales Parker reports that it did not show any rings.

This bird is almost certainly the individual recorded at Conisholme from 29th January to 1st February and previously at Fraisthorpe, East Yorkshire on 25th to 28th January. It was seen leaving Fraisthorpe to the south on the last date.

I was unable to report this record earlier as the landowner was adamant that he did not want the bird publicized until after its departure. This was understandable since it was accompanying a newly-installed flock of sheep which were more nervous of humans than the stork itself. If the sheep panicked and ran, the bird would fly off, only to return some time later. In this secluded location, there were no roads or tracks along which the bird could be approached and seen.

When I heard of its appearance at Scrivelsby, I made enquiries and apparently the farmer last saw the bird on 1st February. Whilst it seemed to be feeding well in the sheep pasture at Conisholme, I wonder how it will fare in the current snow and freezing conditions. White Storks at this time of the year are obviously almost bound to be escaped birds.

Regards, Steve Lorand.

The White Stork was on the landfill site at Kirkby on Bain again to-day and I watched from around 12:30 to 14:00. Also over the landfill site was a Red Kite and around the LWT pit I saw Little Egrets, Water Rail, Kingfisher, Sparrowhawk and Common Buzzard.

The Stork may not have the best of credentials but it is certainly well travelled, where photographed the white and black markings along the wing show this to be the same bird. The question is where was it before the first sighting?

This bird does not appear to be the one that was in Lincs/Yorks last year which had different markings a tatty wing and a ring.
