Post subject:  Jays
Three jays heading south over Lincoln this morning are the lastest in numerous Jay sightings I've had in the last few weeks. I have seen very few Jays over the last few years, but have probably seen well over 50 recently all over the county. Has anyone else noted an influx or is it just me?

Quite a Gib rarity, Jay. There has been one seen occasionally for the past 4 days and 2 birds seen today.

At Garthorpe where jays are locally absent as breeders and quite rare, I've noticed one flying W on Sept 23rd and two on Sept 30th.

You may be aware there's been a fairly large movement going on in Kent and elsewhere in the south-east. The maximum count I'm aware of is 172 near Dover on the 29th.

Seemed to be a good breeding year in Laughton forest with several broods becoming very mobile by early Sept.

I have also seen more Jays recently than for a long time - 3 together along the Witham this morning. However I was expecting this as I'd stumbled across the BTO migration blog which deals with the current influx. The link is http://btomigrationblog.blogspot.co.uk/

I think there has probably been an influx. I was at Titchwell on 26 Sept. and saw several small flocks of Jays, the largest comprising 13 birds.

There was a Jay at Saltfleet Haven this morning, which I was surprised to find was my first for Lincs in 2012.

As with the 1983 influx/movement there seems to be a failure of the acorn crop in many parts of Europe (brought about no doubt in part by the poor summer weather), although many birds are probably 'local', many have been seen coming 'in-off' on the east coast confirming immigration. Two more Jays over Lincoln centre today.

These Jays may hang around as they seemed to after the 1983 'invasion'. One I ringed in Boston in late 1983 (there were none in Boston prior to 1983) was found dead locally some 9 years later !

Funnily enough, I was talking to my other half in Belfast earlier (before I had seen this thread) and she commented on the unusually high numbers of Jays that she has been seeing around Northern Ireland this last week too!
