A long-awaited arrival of thrushes materialized down the NE wind in very murky and foggy conditions. At the south end it was Redwings that predominated with an estimated 6,500 coming in during the morning. Fieldfares were more prominent after 0900 with ca. 1,500 seen. Other thrushes were 700 Blackbirds, at least 100 Song Thrushes and 8 Ring Ouzels. A fine sight included in the counts above was that of 2,300 Redwings and 600 Fieldfares feeding together on a freshly-cut lucerne field behind the sea-bank, and shortly afterwards there were 1,000 Redwings and 220 Fieldfares on a newly-ploughed field near the Coastguard cottages. The poor presence of berries ensured that many birds preferred to feed on the open ground as opposed to feeding in the bushes. When disturbed, many moved south down the dunes or headed to the SW inland. Other birds of note were 100 Chaffinches, 63 Bramblings, only 2 Siskins, 40 Goldcrests, Chiffchaff, 50 Robins, Common Redstart, 9 Long-tailed Tits, 2 Grey Wagtails, Lapland Bunting, 3 Jays and 9 Whooper Swans. |
