What a great day! It was quite evident at first light that there was a major fall of Thrushes and it continued nearly all day. I covered the East side of the reserve from The Ring (briefly) up to the North east corner of Measure’s near the Golf Course, taking in Mead’s, Shoveler’s and a small bit of Measure’s. The count of Thrushes relates just to this area and does not include unseen fly over birds or the west side of the reserve
Grounded thrush flocks included 130 Redwing and 60 Fieldfare on Golf Course adjacent to Measure’s. 300 Redwing and 300 Fieldfare on Freshwater Marsh and 140 Redwing in Army Swaithe. Total day count was Fieldfare 2490 Redwing 1810
Also of note were a total of 68 Brambling. A flock of 42 (including at least a dozen cracking males) landed in a Hawthorn bush north of North building early on. Other flocks of 6, 6 and 4 with the rest fly overs.
Other totals were
Blackbird 210 Song Thrush 80 Mistle Thrush 4 Ring Ouzel 4 (at least) Goldcrest 38 Chiffchaff 2 Robin 60 Black Redstart (male in bottom of Hawthorn bush north of North Building) I hear RD had 5 together near the Tern Hut but they must have moved on as I couldn’t find them. Woodcock 2 Swallow 10S
The only thing missing was a Pallas’s, Radde’s or RFBT but there is always tomorrow!!
