Bird Information: Alkborough Flats Lesser Yellowlegs dropped in with Redshank around 3.30 this afternoon, after a few seconds it flew off again. It reappeared after around ten minutes landing on the far side of the mud from the main hide. Also present were 3 Hen Harriers with 2 males together and female Merlin. A Bittern flew South past the hide on the floodbank this afternoon. No sign of the L.B Dowitcher. The roads around Alkborough this morning were really icy with the approach track really bad.

Message from GPC that the road to the lower car park at Alkborough Flats is not currently passable because of ice. Several vehicles are stuck in the park and cannot get out.
If visiting whilst its frosty use only the Whitton road car park.

road now closed by Highways agency until further notice -- it was interesting to see a minibus getting up the hill after two cars had ended up side on coming back down -- re-route a spring Derek? surely you must realise that common sense is not a feature of the highways department thought process --

It is a classic responsibility get out to put up a sign saying road closed rather than actually attending to the issue in hand; the sign will no doubt remain there for ever more and people will eventually just drive past it but as the sign is up the council will have a get out if anything happens -- I am quite amazed that Severn Trent who manage the sewage works at the foot of the hill do not make more of the inadequacy of this road -- maybe a few letters to the highways department are needed??? anyone with a few minutes to spare?


all the site is frozen by the way apart from a couple of bits of open water and with a hard frost tonight it will all mots probably be frozen tomorrow morning --

If it is highways responsible, then yes! it was a silly question.
Though one would think a Health & Safety issue might get even their attention.

Don't know about "the classic responsibility get out" Graham.
Apparently the road does not fall under the jurisdiction of the Highways Agency.
Even if your sliding down sideways to the car park and can't get back up the hill.

They replied with in minutes though and on a Sunday. (see below)

The Highways Agency is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the motorway network and major trunk roads in England. A trunk road is defined as a strategic link road between two centres of significant economic importance: such as cities, ports and airports where a motorway is not present.

UPDATE - Reply from Highways Agency.
If your email relates to an issue which is not on the strategic road network, for example a suburban, local or residential road, you should forward your email to the relevant Local Authority who should be able to assist you. You can find details of Local Authorities using the search facility on the direct.gov website at: http://local.direct.gov.uk/LDGRedirect/Start.do?mode=1

Your email will be passed to the relevant team within the Highways Agency and they will respond to you within a maximum of 15 working days.
