At around 14:30 hrs this afternoon I looked out into my back garden (S. Lincoln Suburbs) and was surprised to see a male Blackcap, I continued watching and within 2 minutes spotted a female busily feeding in a bush. It's surely too early and cold for nesting to begin ????? Image
These birds are only the second and third Blackcaps that I have seen in my Garden in 42yrs the first one was in February this year.
I do feed the birds right through the year so presumably they have been attracted by the more common visitors, sparrows, tits etc.

Best Wishes

Derek

Derek,
Over-wintering Blackcaps in Britain is comparatively recent. I went to a lecture by Dr. Peter Berthold on the subject in the late '90's and the following link gives more information: http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v3 ... 668a0.html
Hope it helps.
