Further to Grahame's recent post, I pulled into the layby off the A46 c.300 yards S of the Thorpe-on-the-Hill roundabout this morning (WED) at c.1050 but there was nothing to report (NTR). I then drove around Witham St Hughs, meeting up with Peter S. and his Dad (Metheringham) and Chris G. but again NTR, although earlier Peter and his Dad had seen a flighty group of c12. At 12.15, on the A46 going back towards the Thorpe-on-the-Hill roundabout, I clearly saw some Waxwings silhouetted in a low tree along the opposite carriageway. So, I rounded the roundabout and drove back S. Fortunately, the Waxwings were perched just at the entrance to the Lincolnshire Enterprise Park, another 300 yards or so S of Grahame's layby, with plenty of parking. I counted 21 and they were feeding on small black berries in the nearby A46 hedgerow ( Boxthorn or Viburnham sp. ? ), and later also on Hawthorn berries along the side road to the Enterprise Park itself. Arriving back home, I logged on and saw Paul Marshall's post re c.60 Waxwings opposite the A46 layby between the Riseholme and Nettleham roundabouts on the A46 bypass near Lincoln. I parked in the layby for c.half an hour from 1.30pm but NTR. However, on my way back home at c.2.00pm, at the Riseholme roundabout in the central circular reservation, 18 Waxwings were perched. Some were flying across the A46 to feed on Hawthorn berries. So, despite some NTR areas, I managed to catch up with a total of 39 Waxwings today. Freddy |
