The number of Redpolls visiting my small Lincoln garden during the most part of December has been a regular 7. However, this dramatically increased to 25 on the 27th Dec and then 30 on the following day. However, yesterday (31st Dec) a new record was set with an amazing sight of 44 feeding either on the Nyjer feeders or mainly on spilt seed on the lawn. This smashes the previous garden record of 27 set in the winter of 2011, although unlike that year there have been no Mealies accompanying them (yet!).

Today (New Years Day) numbers have fallen to just 24 - the garden feels rather empty!

I have also been having a record Winter for Redpolls in my garden in Dunsby. Normally I have none, but this Winter I started with 4 or 5 in November which built up to about 12 just before Christmas. They are down to 3 in the New Year but it's a joy to hear them as I walk out the back door - their calls remind me of a half full box of matches being shaken. They are feeding on niger seed and I have planted a semi-mature Alder, full of cones, next to the feeder for some photographic opportunities.

They certainly are a joy to hear (and see) in the garden Hugh. They are cracking little birds.

Interestingly numbers have also dwindled into the New Year in my garden with just 12 today (6th), the lowest count for almost a month.

Good luck with the photographs.
