Boultham Mere (30.12.2012): Tufted Duck, Coot, Shoveller, Goosander(2), Black Headed Gull, Lesser Black Backed Gull, Wood Pigeon, Willow tit(2), Great tit, Blue Tit, Reed Bunting. Swanholme Lakes (1.1.2013): Wigeon(6+), Black Headed Gull(100+), Long Tailed Tit(6+), Goosander(3+), Gadwall(6+), Mallard(6+), Coot(24+), Cormorant(2), Great Crested Grebe, Crow, Mute Swan(4), Greylag Goose. |

Swanholme Lakes, Thursday (3rd) afternoon from 14:00 goosander 12f 8m - only 2 pairs initially red crested pochard 1 pair great spotted woodpecker 1 shoveler 5m 4f teal 2 grey heron 1 great crested grebe 3 black headed gull 2000 - many on the pit by the Swanholme Tavern pub half a hour before dusk. Strangely no other gulls on the Lakes wigeon 100 tufted duck 100 coot 300 mute swan 30 cormorant 10 carrion crow jackdaw 100. judging by early morning fly overs there must be a big night time roost here |

There certainly is a big night time roost Chris. Around 3-4000 (sometimes more) corvids roost in Hartsholme and Swanholme consisting of Jackdaw, Rook and Carrion Crow. The sight and sound is spectacular on a winters evening and well worth hanging around until dusk/dark to witness if your in the area. A great end to a birding day. Matthew |

Would there be enough interest in getting a couple of winter (jan, feb & mar) organised counts on the corvid roost? I am guessing we would need between 5-10 people to be present from about an hour before dusk? PM me if you would like to be involved? Andrew |
