Crofton Road Industrial Estate, Lincoln
4 January 2013. 1pm
At least 5 waxwings fly-catching from large trees to rear of ATS depot (main entrance road onto estate).
Just watching them from office window!

Further to Brian's post, I visited the Crofton Road Industrial Estate this morning (Sat). There were no Waxwings at the back of ATS, but a little further down the road, opposite the Main Reception of PC Coaches, 11 Waxwings were perched in a couple of low trees. They were flying up occasionally, insect catching. 6 of them flew off to the far side of the Estate and perched in a tall tree behind Peregrine Mews, where they started insect catching again. They had flown over a berry bearing bush which was being guarded by a territorial Mistle Thrush.

I visited early this afternoon. There were 7 waxwings in the tall tree behind the ATS premises. That is best viewed from the Lincoln Drum Centre gate, immediately beyond ATS. They were occasionally dropping down to feed but I could not see where. Shortly before I left at about 2.30 a young fox appeared out of the scrub to the edge of the ATS forecourt. He watched me watching him for a few seconds but did not seem unduly bothered. A nice addition.

The fog was just lifting at 10.30 this morning (Sun), as I arrived on Crofton Road. 11 Waxwings were feeding on berries (incl. Cotoneaster) at the corner of Crofton Road and Wavell Drive opposite the Pickfords Storage Warehouse. There is a good supply of berries remaining there on 4 low trees.

A mixed flock of c.20 Redwings and Fieldfares were flying around and they perched for a time in one of the tall Poplars nearby.

There was nothing to report (NTR) from the long row of shiny red Hips behind the Wickes Store on the nearby Outer Circle Road, nor on the prolifically fruiting Cotoneasters on the Bishops Road/Proctor Road corner nor on the Deacon Road Cotoneasters opposite UPS....it can only be a matter of time now. They were all favourite Waxwing stakeouts in the 2010/11 irruption. :D
