Most of the Pits are frozen over but there are open areas on Ness and New Pits 3 and 5. Target Pit is totally free of ice.
I spent and hour and half checking for bittern and waders this morn. I had no luck on the bittern front (I understand we have had two records of 1 and 3 birds in the last couplke of days) but there was plenty of wildfowl. The red crested pochard was on Target Pit which allows easy viewing.
Chowder was recieving this mornings high tide and a limited shoreline was available for the waders. Six bar tailed godwit, 2 dunlin, 1 ringed plover, 17 golden plover, 80 lapwing, 12 redshank, 4 wigeon and about 50 teal were present.
Elsewhere I came across about 20 fieldfare and a flock of 36 waxwing. The waxwing were all together in the small tree at the entrance to the New Centre. They allowed me to get very close and I stared in gratitude.
