Interesting Woodlark record Gary -- it would be interesting to know what they are feeding on in these dire conditions -- from the latest photo it looks like a feed trough?

Hi Graham
Only spend the odd hour there but most of feeding done on manure heap that farmer has kindly agreed to stir up to reveal whatever lies beneath. Presume they are feeding here as manure heat has prevented freezing. The trough was filled with grain that was too small for planting which he donates to locals and friends like myself.
Hope this helps
Garry

Thanks Gary interesting stuff. No doubt plenty of inverts and small worms etc in the muck hill for them a real life line in freezing weather.

Hi

When I worked on the Hants/Surrey border, we used to see small groups of winter woodlarks on mounds of old hops that were spread over the tree nursery beds adjacent to the heaths. These attracted many chaffinch and brambling too. There was clearly heat coming from these mounds but presumably food too.

Cheers

Kev
