The Lincolnshire Bird Club

I needed to do some shopping this morning (Sat) at the Budgens Supermarket in Waddington - about 2 miles from BBH, so I decided to take the scenic route (about 15 miles) via Nocton Heath - Scopwick - Metheringham - Waddington. That route is lined with miles and miles of untrimmed hedges. All the Hawthorn berries have gone but there are dozens and dozens of Wild Rose bushes in the hedgerows, with masses of fruiting Hips, bright red in the sunshine.

At c.11.00, I found just one solitary Waxwing perched on the top of a sapling on the Nocton Heath road junction along Bloxholme Lane where dozens of birders parked when the Black Kite/hybrid Kite was in the area of Ram Farm some years ago.

The Waxwings seen on the B1188 near Nocton Village on 10 Jan had moved on. It can only be a matter of time, however, before those abundant Rose Hips on my scenic route attract another flock of Waxwings. I shall return!

Not quite Freddy, there were 22 Waxwings present this morning between the two turn off junctions to Nocton on the B1188

The Waxwings had moved on again when I checked the trees between the two Nocton turnoffs just before 2.00 this afternoon......BUT.....I then relocated them just a couple of hundred yards away opposite the entrance to 'Nocton House'.

They were perched in a tree by the roadside but within 5 minutes they flew across a nearby field to the railway cutting. Parking (temporarily) on the railway bridge leading to Nocton Village, I could see that the Waxwings were crossing the lines to feed on Rose Hips on the railway embankment. Alison and Henry were driving around the area looking for the Waxwings. They saw me with my binoculars trained on something, and after parking further along the road in a pull-off, we all watched the flock from the railway bridge. Henry mentioned that he had met up with you at Kirkby-on Bain this morning Smewing.

They were still Waxwinging when I left at c.2.45.
