Some recent highlights in our Lincoln garden over the last couple of weeks have included a cracking male Reed Bunting on 25th Jan which is the first record for the garden since we moved into the property in 2007. A female Brambling at lunchtime today (30th Jan) is the fourth record for the garden but the first since a male visted over the period of a week in October 2010.
Both male and female Great Spotted Woodpeckers have been visiting regularly as have Long-tailed Tits, with up to 7 of the latter, both species feeding on suet nibbles.
Redpoll numbers have tailed off since the New Year, but have still been a daily feature with up to 12 generally being the norm, although surprisingly numbers reduced during the recent cold snap. A welcome surprise however on 29th Jan was when numbers shot up to 27, mainly feeding on the ground on spilt niger seed. This is the largest count in the garden for a few weeks (following the record 44 seen around the Christmas period). Interestingly 2 of the birds visiting have been showing off shiny BTO style metal rings.
