A good morning on the patch, cold but bright and sunny:-
3 Bitterns seen at the mere, at 10:10 one bird flew from the west reeds, right past the hide, and landed in the south reeds, about 10 minutes later a second bird flew from the north reeds and also landed in the south reeds. About 10:40 I found a third bird feeding on the front edge of the north reeds, this bird was watched, on and off, for about 20 minutes as it slowly worked its way along the edge of the reeds. This is the first time in 30 years I have recorded 3 birds at the mere, most winters see 1 bird and I have recorded 2 birds in 4 winters. Also at the mere this morning 34 Gadwall, 2 Pochard, 35 Tufted Duck, 3 Goosanders and 1 Cormorant.
1 Green Woodpecker on the tip. 3 Mistle Thrushes. A flock of c60 Lesser Redpolls, 2 Chaffinches, 6 Greenfinches, 1 Reed Bunting and 10 Yellowhammers feeding on weedy field by Catchwater copse.
