A glorious day around The Wash today. Whisper it but Spring may just be starting to, erm, spring!

First up was Westgate Wood, Wyberton. It's relatively new woodland (planted in December 1999) but it is beginning to attract some great little visitors now (Waxwing, Mealy and Lesser Redpoll, Whitethroat in the last twelve months) as well as raptors such as Kestrels, Sparrowhawk, Buzzard and Barn Owl. The wood was humming this morning. Along with healthy numbers of Blackbird, Chaffinch, Blue Tit, Great Tit and a roving charm of 40+ Goldfinch, todays highlights were:-

Siskin - 22
Brambling - 3
Long-tailed Tit - 9
Reed Bunting - 4
Wren - 2
Mistle Thrush - 2
Skylark - 1 (Display flight and song)
Kestrel - 1(m)

Then, after a welcome cup of coffee, onward to Freiston Shore for the afternoon! I think Matthew Harrison impressively described what is around the reserve at the moment with his epic list yesterday, so I will stick to my highlights. A stop in the lagoon hide followed by a leisurely stroll to Cut End and back yielded the following:-

Barn Owl - 3 (1 Lagoon, 2 Wet Grassland)
Marsh Harrier - 1(f) (Saltmarsh)
Water Rail - 1 (Wet Grassland)
Twite - 13 (Saltmarsh)

In the summer, the dyke that runs along the western edge of the wood has held Reed and Sedge warblers.
