Getting up a little earlier enabled me to get to the Cleethorpes Waxwing stakeout by 08.45. I parked not far from the Cotoneaster berry tree at No. 42 Lidgard Road. A flock of c.20 Waxwings flew in at 09.20, circled but then most of them flew off. Just 7 of the flock perched in a tree on the Green opposite the berries. They didn't attempt to feed and flew off after 10 minutes. I stayed around until 10.30 but the birds didn't return. There were several (eye-catching) Starling flocks around.

I then returned to Lincoln by a long detour - via Skegness.There was nothing to report in the Beacon Way/Beacon Park Drive area (11.30 -50) although I noted the target berry tree as the one on which I saw Waxwings feeding during the 2010/11 irruption. I drove on to the Drummond Road stakeout area. There were up to 21 Waxwings perched in 4 sapling Poplar Trees behind Nos. 360/362 Drummond Road (12.00 noon). They were flying down and feeding out of sight in the rear gardens of Nos. 360/358.
They were still flying from, and returning to, the Poplars when I left at 12.30pm.

Hi Freddy,
Don't take this the wrong way, but have just connected with the 20 waxwings on the tree next to the berry tree between Beacon Park and the mini-roundabout (3/3 4:40pm).

I know the ups and downs of Waxwing watching only too well - having now had 53 separate sightings since November and about the same number of dips, if not more (8 running until I connected with the Clee birds this morning).

I did several trips to the Beacon Way berry tree during the 2010/11 irruption and spent a few chilly hours at the bus-stop opposite, car parking being impossible on Beacon Way. I had some good sightings - plus a dip or two.

This morning, seeing so many berries still on the Cotoneaster, I knew the birds would return sooner or later. It's a pity that Skegness is such a journey from Lincoln, otherwise I would visit more often.

PS. I wonder if the Drummond Road Waxwings are the same birds as the Beacon Way flock. I checked out 21 at D.Rd this morning and you saw 20 on B.Way this afternoon. Last Sunday, 27 were counted at both locations but at different times of the day again. Waxwings are well known to do feeding tours in a given area so it is certainly possible. (I think Kevin also floated the idea recently).

Hi

On 28th Feb, I saw 19 waxwings at the Drummond Road site at about 10.30 a.m. And then drove straight to the Beacon Road site where I did not see any. I have not heard that two flocks have been seem simultaneously at both sites.
