I had a long walk today around the Willingham Woods area today. At nearly every stand of conifers, Siskins could be heard singing in the tops. Specific areas were Linwood Warren, Chapel Hill Farm, Pickards Plantation and Walesby Moor. It was impossible to estimate numbers but I have never heard them in so many different parts at the same time. Is this happening in similar habitats at Laughton/Woodhall/Bourne?

I walked through Kirkby woodlands last tues and noted several pairs or small groups of siskins some
were singing. Total of c 20 birds on a 4 km circuit, (only 3 singing goldcrests noted)
regards John.

Apologies for late reply.

Only low numbers of Siskin in Woodhall - 2 on Thursday on the golf course and 1 by the tearoom feeders.

Good passage of Siskins in the last week. The ones at Bourne in February have mainly gone, and there are a lot of new ones in from further south. We have caught well over 500 in Bob Sheppard's garden since February and wheras the early ones were of a base weight of 12 - 13 gm, most are now 15+ gm. Two have weighed in at 17.7 gram, which equates to carrying about 30% body weight as fat for migrating..........they won't be around for much longer.

Several males singing with attendant females at Laughton today. One female nest building. Last year we had fledged young out of the nest before this date. Also 4 pairs of crossbills in display, the first I have seen for several months. But still not a single summer migrant not even a Chiff!
