Post subject:  Gibraltar Point - 7/4/13 - What a day!!!

At last a long overdue south-westerly wind to spur on some visible migration. What a day!!

Today's Highlights:
Red Kite 2 (Together, circled the reserve for about an hour then drifted slowly south)
Common Buzzard 11 (9 South)
Marsh Harrier 1 (Juvenile, south)
Sparrowhawk 3
Kestrel 1
Woodcock 67 (!!!Massive influx!!!)
Chiffchaff 2 (The first singing bird of the year)
Redwing 3157 (South)
Fieldfare 62 (South)
Chaffinch 339 (South)
Brambling 7 (South)
Linnet 62 (South)
Bullfinch 1 (South)
Tree Sparrow 2 (South)
Yellowhammer 3 (South)
Rook 19 (South)

From reading your species list I obviously made the wrong decision to go to Frieston Shore area today Richard. :(
I did get to Gib. eventually but not until late afternoon.
Only to be informed by a photographer chap I met at the first car park. That he had seen no visible bird movement on the reserve today and that apart from the many Avocet and a few duck, there was little else on the reserve. Why did I listen to him? (2nd wrong choice of the day) :roll:
So crossed the road to view and enjoy the many Avocet and a single Water Rail, before heading for home.

Sorry I missed you Richard. Keep up the good work.
